Marmaris in History

The ancient name of Marmaris was Physkos, and the city was developed as a port for Caria. There is not much of the ancient remains surviving. You can see some of the ruins to the north, on Asartepe Hill. However, these are very limited in number and would only be of interest to archaeologists.

The known history of Marmaris goes back to 900 BC. In the Hellenistic era it was under the rule of the Seleucids for a time and later was controlled by the Romans, Byzantines and, in the 13th century, the Menteşeoğulları. The Ottoman Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent conquered the city in 1522. From here he launched his successful campaign to capture the island of Rhodes.

When initially a part of the Ottoman Empire, Marmaris was called Mimaras, with this later being changed to Mermeris and finally to its present name.

Between 1919 and 1921, Marmaris came under the control of the Italians. Following this, the town, now a part of the Turkish Republic, was the home to fishermen and sponge divers until the 1980s.

Other ancient cities that are within the borders of the Marmaris region are as follow:

Amos (Hisarönü-Turunç), Byabassos (Hisarönü), Syma (Bayır Köyü-village), Larymna (Bozburun), Thyssanos (Söğüt), Phoinix (Taşlıca), Loryma (Bozukkale), Kasara (Serçe Limanı-Port), Kedria (Sedir Adası-Island), Euthena and Amnistos (Karacasöğüt).

Including Shyskos, all these were Carian cities. However, little remains from these cities, with there being no more than some walls and ruins of castles. (Check pages the relevant pages for details.)

The Marmaris Castle and the Old City

Marmaris is one of the most popular holiday resorts in Turkey. If you are travelling with your own vehicle, when following the road through the pine forests stop and take a break when you see the sign that reads,"İşte Marmaris" (Viola Marmaris). You will see the town from above. Although there has been a high level of construction in the town over the past 15 years, it still looks beautiful from this vantage point.

Marmaris, with its population increasing to 100,000 in the summer months, is now a huge holiday resort city. The bed capacity of the hotels has surpassed 60,000 and it is possible to find hotels that will suit all types of budget. There are hundreds of restaurants, cafes and entertainment places newly opened up.

Marmaris is one of the rare towns in Turkey where you can swim right in the city centre, despite the increased construction, as environmental and water treatment facilities have been installed. For those who seek cleaner seas and quieter spots there are boats trips that go to other coves or you can get there by land. If you are interested in water sports and nature activities the hotels and travel agencies here provide you with many alternatives.

The most important historic building in the town centre is the castle. The first castle built on this site was constructed up by the Ionians, with the present castle you see being built by the Ottomans in 1522. It was badly damaged by the shelling of a French battleship in 1914. The castle was opened to public in the Republican era and 18 houses and a fountain was constructed during this period. Inside the castle, which was restored in 1980-90, there is now a museum. The entrance of the castle opens right onto a garden. You can get to the top of the walls by staircases going up from either side of the courtyard. You should have a look at the view from the walls.

Two of the indoors areas now house an archaeological display. In both the garden and these rooms there are pieces excavated from throughout this region: amphorae, earthenware pieces, glassware, coins and decorative pieces from digs conducted at Knidos, Burgaz and Hisarönü. One of the galleries is set out as an ethnography section of a Turkish house and the other as the place of the castle commander.

Another Ottoman building in the town is the Hafza Sultan Kervansaray (caravanserai or travellers inn). In the inscription written on the building it is stated that the caravanserai was founded in 1545. The caravanserai, which is covered with arches on the top, is right at the entrance of the narrow street that leads to the castle. The seven small domed rooms of the caravanserai today serve as souvenir and gifts shops. The Historic Bazaar in the centre of the town is still functioning as a marketplace today. The only changes are in the people who shop there and the goods available, everything has became tourism oriented.

In the vicinity of Marmaris there are other structures that date from the Ottoman era. These include the İbrahim Ağa Camii (Mosque) in the Kemeraltı district, built in 1789, while the bridge of the Taşhan (Stone Han) and the Kemerli Köprü (Arched Bridge), 10 kilometres down the Muğla road, were built in 1552. Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent was said to have visited the tomb of Sarıana, famed for her prophecies, which is also in the Kemeraltı district before he started his campaign against the island of Rhodes. As the legend goes, all of the soldiers in the Ottoman army had the milk of the cow of Sarıana for breakfast in the preparation for this campaign.

İçmeler

In the vicinity of Marmaris there is another holiday destination that is developing called İçmeler (place of drinking water). This is ideal for those who want to enjoy the entertainment facilities of Marmaris but want to have a quite time during the day and be able to sleep soundly at night. Despite having numerous hotels the regulations that have been enacted mean that İçmeler is very green, full of flowers, has good and clear walking trails and its beach is always very clean.

The park inside the hamlet is almost like a botanic garden. The area behind the park, which is called Sanat Sokağı (Art Street), has a wide range of displays of the local traditional handcrafts and paintings from Marmaris-based artists.

The stream that divides the hamlet through its centre has been organised to add atmosphere to the beautiful hamlet. It is a colourful and lively part of İcmeler, with the two banks of the stream filled with stalls where souvenirs, gifts and handcrafts are sold.

İçmeler presents you with rich options for eating, drinking and entertainment. But for those who want even more Marmaris is just a few steps away. There are very frequent and regular transport links between Marmaris and İçmeler.

In the past, İçmeler used have healing springs but today do not look for them, your hunt will be in vain. Instead, you will have to make do with bottled water to kill your thirst.

İçmeler is also ideal for swimming and water sports. The aqua park right behind the main park in the centre is ideal for families with children. Despite lots of construction and growing numbers the hamlet’s waters and beach have remained clean. However, if you want an even cleaner sea and smaller crowds you should take a boat trip to the coves in the area.

In İçmeler modern and traditional architecture come together. The Köyiçi region behind the beach area and the canyon region a bit further from Köyiçi and that is within walking distance have facilities to the taste those that are into nature and old village life.

Boat trips to the region

One of the most pleasant ways of passing a day in Marmaris is to take one of the daily boat trips. There are hundreds of small or larger boats that fill up with people either at the main quay in the town centre opposite the marketplace or from other parts of Marmaris. They visit nearby coves and islands, with some of the most popular destinations being Yıldız Adası (Star Island-Nimara), Turunç, Kumlubük, Çiftlik and Fosforlu Mağara (Phosphorus Cave). At night there are also moonlight boat tours. Some boats give lunches in some restaurants at places they stop or on the boat itself. Certainly entertainment on the boat is an something that will not be forgotten. There are also longer one day boat tours that depart out of Marmaris. These tours use larger boats and their destination is Ekincik and Dalyan.

Waterfall, cave and ancient settlements
in Karacasöğüt

Eleven kilometres along the Marmaris-Muğla road there is the turn for Karacasöğüt, with the road passing through the pine forest, bringing you to the beautiful shores of the Gulf of Gökova.

The ports of Karaca and Söğüt are important stopping points for the boats on the Blue Cruise. There are still traces of the big fire of some years back which swept a large area to destruction.

In order to get to the Söğüt Şelalesi (Waterfall) and to the Karacain Mağarası (Cave) you take the turn to the right two or three kilometres after you come to Okluk Cove from Karacasöğüt. Since there are no signposts on the road ask villagers for directions. The waterfall cascades down from a height of 25 metres and beneath it there is a natural pool.

The cave has two sections, one known as the Somalıkaya Düdeni (chasm), and the other being the Suçıktı Cave. One of the main entrance points to the Somalıkaya Chasm is from here. To enter into the cave you need to have an inflated boat with you as you can only go through the galleries by water. These sections of the cave has a length of 421 metres and a depth of 15.5 metres. An area of 342 metres in the cave is accessible and has two lakes in it. Amateur travellers should have a guide with them if there are to visit the cave. They should not go more than ten metres from the guide at all times.

The Suçıktı Cave is one kilometre to the west of the Samlıkaya Chasm and is one kilometre long. Part of this cave has been mapped out by cave explorers, though the rest is uncharted. The area of the cave and waterfall has been put under a nature protection order. Work is continuing to open up the cave to tourism.

Two kilometres to the south east of the village of Söğüt, on the top of the Altınsivrisi Hill, there is the ancient city of Euthena. Those who dare make the climb up to the ancient city, which is 700 metres above sea level, should first go to the village of Karaca in the Ovacık district, and take the narrow and steep path up. Those who are not familiar with the area should ask the villagers for directions as to the right path. As you get closer to the hilltop you will see the city necropolis and, going a bit higher, you get to see the ruins of the ancient city walls, cisterns and rock tombs. On the hilltops, apart from the remains of an ancient temple, you will also the cottage of the forest watch official. If you are lucky you might get a tea for your tiresome climb here. It is believed that Euthena was an ancient city that was associated with Rhodes in antiquity.

There is another ancient city near to the village of Söğüt, this being Amnistos, which is on the point nearby. The ruins that survive are parts of the city walls and the walls of the port.

If you like you can take a moonlight tour on a boat leaving from the yachting port, departing around midnight. You can have great fun.

THE DIVING POINTS IN MARMARİS
AND THEIR CHARACTERISTICS

Aşkın Cambazoğlu-Underwater Archaeologist: (Aşkın Diving-Bodrum)

Marmaris is one of the most important regions of Turkey for diving, with 52 points diving points in and around it.

On the daily dive tours departing from the port of Marmaris the following are some of the better known diving spots.

Sarı Mehmet Burnu (Yellow Mehmet Point):

This point, which is between Turunç and İçmeler, is a good spot for both learners and experienced divers. This is where many diving schools bring their groups as there are many schools of blacktail and sea bream. This is a good location to dive at night as there is no current and where the rocks are at a right angle position. There is a shelter in the rocks known as Katedral (Cathedral) Cave.

The Keçi Island Lighthouse:

This is the lighthouse on the point from Marmaris when you leave for the open sea. It is a point that goes from eight to 10 metres down to 38 metres and is much enjoyed by professional divers. If you are lucky you can see many large fish, crayfish, octopus and red cardinal fish. In the turn of the month it has a sweet and changing current and there are plenty of amphorae pieces.

İnce Burun Feneri (Pearl Point Lighthouse:

It is the on the side of Yıldız (Star) Island that faces Marmaris Cove. The visibility of the water is bit lower than that of the open sea. It is an underwater area of real tropical sea where there are underwater peaks from three to 40 metres. Especially towards the end of the season the area attracts underwater photographers as there are schools of leer-fish, dentex and very a colourful variety of sponge.

Also can see the sea rabbits, though only if you pay great attention. These come in very different colours and are one to four centimetres in size.

Hayıtlı Burun (Point):

This is the point opposite of the Keçi Island Lighthouse just when you leave Marmaris. The area is named as "the Reef" by divers and it is easy to anchor a boat. Here both learning and experienced divers can dive and continue to be interested, even if you dive on it many times as you can always see some fragments of amphorae. These pieces are on the rocky ground at a depth from between five to 38 metres. At 30 metres you can get to see different large fish.

Abdi Reis Koyu (Cove):

This is a beautiful diving point on the side of Yıldız Island that faces the open sea. The divers also describe it as an aquarium for the clarity of its waters. The cove is not only suitable for educational diving, it is also interesting, exciting and fun for experienced divers if they swim out further. Its depth starts at zero metres and goes down to 33 metres, with fish generally being seen at the12 metre mark. Since it is close to the Fosforlu Mağara (Cave) there is heavy sea traffic.

Yazih Kaya (Rock):

Yazilı Rock is on the open side of Yıldız Island, with the depth going from three metres down to 30-32 metres. It is very suitable for morning diving, as its gets shadowy in the afternoon, has large rocks and right angel walls. You can see many schools of sea bream and blacktail that greet divers. When you swim towards the Renkli Mağara (Colourful Cave) you can even see sea insects.

Baca Mağarası (Chimney Cave):

The Chimney Cave will definitely attract the attention of underwater photographers but it is not as interesting for divers. However, it is a must to dive on most famous of Marmaris’s caves.

With a depth ranging from five to 50 metres, the cave and its surrounds has something for both learners and experienced divers. This is a conical shaped and chimney-like cave that is entered at a depth of 14 metres from the point and exited at four metres. Inside the cave there are red and white cardinal fish and shrimps that you can see on all dives.

Aksu Koyu (Cove):

Aksu Cove is on the open sea side of Yıldız Island. It is exciting with its heavy blue colour as you dive deeper. This is the only cove that can cater to learners, experienced divers and those who just want to stay on the boat.

In the area where the boat anchors there are many small fishes for beginner divers to enjoy. However, once you swim further out, to around the 18 to 20 metres mark and to where there are rocks, you get to see larger fish. There is a wall that goes down to 40 metres right where the point is and on each dive here you can see a Byzantine era amphora that has a round opening hole on the top.

Kütük Cove:

This cove ranges in depth from zero to 52 metres and, despite being suitable for wall diving, it is one that you should be careful at since the enchantment of viewing the wonders of the bottom can cause you to overstay you limits. On each dive you definitely see some shoals of big crayfish and others marine life. At times, as the seasons change, so too does the current.

Kadırga Cove:

This is in the furthest point from Marmaris and is opposite the Kadırga Lighthouse where the rocky area is. It is a beautiful reef that starts from zero metres to 38–40 metres in depth. It is one of the rare places where both beginners and experienced divers can have an unforgettable dive. Here, in front of the lighthouse, starting from 15 metres, there is an amphorae field that marks the site of a Hellenistic era ship wreck. As the bottom is rocky, hundreds of amphorae are to be seen, caught between the rocks. In the beginning of the season, if you are lucky, among the amphorae you can see many sea animals and crayfish. On almost all dives at the end of the season divers get saluted by a shoal of gobies. Many other types of fish can be found amidst the amphorae, an interesting scene for underwater photographers.

THE YACHTING FESTIVALS
The International Marmaris Yachting Festival is staged at the Marmaris Yacht Port every year on 8 to 14 May.

The International Marmaris Yachting Races Week is staged out of the Marmaris Yacht Port on 1 to 6 November every year.

The International Bozburun Gulet Festival is held in Bozburun on 26-28 October.

The Marmaris Yacht Festival is among the few events among similar organisations in Turkey and around the world that can point to a continuity of 21 years. The participating boats moor at the Marmaris municipality quay and there is a boat show at the same venue. The boat show also includes displays of spare parts that are related to yachting and all associated equipment.

For all the yachts that take part in the festival the event also means that the season has started. Both participants and spectators relax and are entertained during the week long activities. The promotional trip at the end of the festival is open to all travel agencies who want to take part.

Every evening the results of the races are announced and an award is given to the winner. The drinks, food and live music are all chosen with special care to give these nights a colour that you will not forget. The major award ceremony is held on the closing night.
